List Price $1,095.00 $1,142.00
Manufacturer/Licensor Redline Detection Global Leak Detection
Capabilities
General Purpose Tests
Test and locate leaks in Exhaust, Intake, and many other systems.
yes yes The Smoke Wizard with the UV dye can find internal engine leaks that a smoke machine with “smoke only”, like the Smoke Pro, can’t find.
EVAP System Tests 1
Test and locate leaks in the vehicle’s fuel vapor recovery system.
yes(?)1 yes You can use the ‘Smoke Pro’ for checking EVAP systems if you want to risk the potential hazards of adding oxygen to the system. The Smoke Wizard’s advanced technology allows it to be used with shop air, or inert gas for safer EVAP testing.
Leak Down Test (Pressure Decay)
Diagnose small leaks and confirm that a repair is complete.
yes yes The Smoke Wizard does both pressure & vacuum decay. Smoke Pro’s outdated design can’t do vacuum decay, required for natural vacuum decay testing. Note, systems that self-test with Vacuum: Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, and many others.
Variable Smoke Flow
Pinpoint the exact leak location.
yes yes The Smoke Wizard’s easy to read directional knob tells you exactly the flow position. Smoke Pro’s round knob makes it impossible to tell where you’re at.
Diagnose Systems Without Smoke yes yes In addition, Smoke Wizard can diagnose using vacuum-decay, and dye.
Features
Combined Pressure & Vacuum Gauge (IWC) yes yes Smoke Wizard includes a better quality combination Pressure / Vacuum gauge.
Flowmeter yes yes Smoke Wizard’s meter is full size & can measure a .010″ flow, like Chrysler now requires.
Complete Accessory Kit yes yes Smoke Wizard includes a UV light. Ooops, a UV light won’t do Smoke Pro any good!
Compact Design yes yes Smoke Wizard can be laid in a drawer. Redline doesn’t want you tipping theirs over.
Technology
Heating
Element
Glowplug
yes Smoke Wizard uses 10-Year Warranty advanced BOSCH Glow Plug Heater design with advanced microprocessor controller.
Resistance Wire 2 yes Smoke Pro uses an outdated ‘resistance wire’ heater, first introduced in 1994 Vacutec ‘general purpose’ smoke machines.
Computerized Temperature Control yes yes Smoke Wizard uses a much more advanced computer control processor.
Smoke Solution Chemistry (Base Material) Mineral Oil Mineral Oil It’s true; the “base” material of both is mineral. However, Smoke Wizard’s solution is much more! Its Patented UltraTraceUV® is highly refined, includes UV Dye, and is approved by every OEM using smoke today 4. There isn’t an OEM in the world that has approved ‘baby oil’.
Smoke Solution Cost (Per Bottle) $14.99 3

(4 ounces)

$69.95

(12 ounces)

It’s about 5-cents per test more expensive to use the proper solution, when you consider Smoke Pro gets about 100 tests 3 and Smoke Wizard over 300. $14.95 for 4 oz. of cheap baby oil with a little fragrance sounds very expensive to me.
Must Use Manufacturer’s Smoke Solution Only Smoke Wizard doesn’t say you must use our solution. Heck, you can even use baby oil, but we don’t know why you’d want to. Have you ever smelled baby oil after just a few uses in smoke machine? It STINKS! Baby oil is not formulated for repeated heating and vaporization into smoke.
Requires Regular Smoke Solution Changes
Smoke Solution Contains A Dye 4 yes
Will not damage vehicle components, or void factory warranty

?

yes The jury is out on this one. We’ve yet to see a report from a reputable lab for ‘baby oil’. There must be a reason no automaker wants to use it. Don’t they like saving $$?
Smoke Wizard Additional Advanced Technology

Features that Smoke Pro can only Dream About!

Leak Down Test w/Vacuum Decay yes Test the latest vehicles that use vacuum-decay on-board testing, such as: Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Toyota, and many others.
Auto Shut Off Safety Solenoid yes Without this feature, gasoline fumes could exit the EVAP system and fill your work bay.
Internal Filter/ Water Separator yes Protects machine & vehicle systems from contaminants. (Also keeps flow meter clean).
Uses OEM-Approved Technology yes No OEM in the world approves of using Redline’s products. I guess it is more than just the “STINK”.
Notes:

  1. We were generous to put a check mark on Redline’s EVAP column when you consider they don’t have the technology required by OEMs for EVAP testing. They also don’t comply with SAE papers.
  2. Not sure why Redline Detection claims an “Air Safe” design since their machine delivers air (containing oxygen) into the EVAP system. Tack on the fact they lack an auto shut off safety solenoid.
  3. As quoted on Redline Detection website.
  4. The only OEM that doesn’t like to use any kind of dye, in any vehicle system, is Toyota. For them, we have the approved solution without dye. Toyota does not approve the use of ‘baby oil’.
